Quote of the Day

You may not see it now, but this very difficulty will strengthen you. Your heart will grow wiser, your spirit stronger. You already know this. You can even begin to see the ways that this is true.

Quote of the Day

Every life is filled with change and insecurity and every life includes loss and suffering and difficulties that arise regularly. We are all nomads in this ever-changing world, and we need ways to ground ourselves and remain centered no matter what happens.

Quote of the Day

I have become my own version of an optimist. If I can't make it through one door, I'll go through another door - or I'll make a door. Something terrific will come no matter how dark the present.

Quote of the Day

"I understood that although the facts remained immovable, the past was done. My future did not need to be forever a reaction to it. A new and different life was waiting to be lived. All I had to do was make a choice. All I had to do was choose it well."

Quote of the Day

"Of course, there must be lots of Magic in the world," he said wisely one day, "but people don't know what it is like or how to make it. Perhaps the beginning is just to say nice things are going to happen until you make them happen."

- Frances Hodgson Burnett (from The Secret Garden)

Quote of the Day

"The truth is we determine our own futures...ours is a limitless universe of infinite possibilities. From these we make our choices of how to think, feel, react, to be, every minute of every day. These are choices that ultimately determine the experiences we call our life...It means we have great power over the passage and experience of that life...for if we change our choices, we change our 'destiny...' This is why we must make our choices with awareness, with responsibility...We need to ask ourselves whether our daily choices lead us towards greater freedom, joy and truth, or towards greater contraction, pain and self-delusion."

- David Charles Manners (from In the Shadow of Crows)

Quote of the Day

"We must always work, and a self-respecting artist must not fold his hands on the pretext that he is not in the mood. If we wait for the mood, without endeavoring to meet it halfway, we easily become indolent and apathetic. We must be patient, and believe that inspiration will come to those who can master their disinclination. A few days ago I told you I was working every day without any real inspirations. Had I given way to my disinclination, undoubtedly I should have drifted into a long period of idleness. But my patience and faith did not fail me, and today I felt the inexplicable glow of inspiration of which I told you; thanks to which I know beforehand that whatever I write today will have power to make an impression, and to touch the hearts of those who hear it."

- Tchaikovsky

(He is obvioulsy talking about writing music here, but the idea can be extended to the work one does overcoming depression.)

Quote of the Day

"There's a chance the world might not accommodate your plans; you need to determine whether that's a problem with you or with the world. Just don't expect perfection from either party or life becomes unbearable. And it's not. It's really not."

- from Love that Boy

Quote of the Day

"To my suprise...it had not been despair that I had revealed, but rather an affirmation, that the vast ocean of life demanded more than just the dipping of a trepidatious toe. Its infinite depths were to be plunged into, its inestimable fathoms sounded, its boundless waters drunk."

A Lamp in the Darkness - Review

A Lamp in the Darkness: Illuminating the Path Through Difficult Times (Jack Kornfield)

I thought this book was very helpful. It was full of inspiring aphorisms that evoked a sense of comfort. Each chapter contains a guided mindfulness exercise all of which possessed an originality in content rather than just reiterating more well known exercises. It also comes with a CD which has audio orations of some of the meditations.

Even though the title mentions difficult times, I don't think one necessarily needs to be suffering to find this book useful; it can also be used as a guide to help understand past experiences more deeply. Some of the work in this book is very difficult emotionally (you may want to work through the exercises with a therapist). I have heard similar statements from many, if not all, self-help books, but never was one able take me on such an emotional journey simply from reading the words. That's not to say other books and exercises aren't useful, just that, personally, I find they take more creativity and work to be as beneficial.

Despite all the positive things I've said here, I wouldn't rely on this book soley as a means of overcoming difficulties, but then I wouldn't recommend any one thing for such purposes.

Final Rating: Of all the self-help type books I've read, if I could only have read one, I think this would be it.

Quote of the Day

Love came,
and became like blood in my body.
It rushed through my veins and
encircled my heart.
Everywhere I looked,
I saw one thing.
Love’s name written
on my limbs,
on my left palm,
on my forehead,
on the back of my neck,
on my right big toe…
Oh, my friend,
all that you see of me
is just a shell,
and the rest belongs to love.

Quote of the Day

Ecclesiastes 11:1

We must cast our bread
Upon the waters, as the
Ancient preacher said,

Trusting that it may
Amply be restored to us
After many a day.

That old metaphor,
Drawn from rice farming on the
River’s flooded shore,

Helps us to believe
That it’s no great sin to give,
Hoping to receive.

Therefore I shall throw
Broken bread, this sullen day,
Out across the snow,

Betting crust and crumb
That birds will gather, and that
One more spring will come.

Cooking and Community

This reference is to Fresh Choice Kitchens in the Vancouver area, but I encourage readers to do some research to see if similar programs are available in their city. I think this program is a great way of combining nutritional education with social activity. There are many different programs with different criteria for participation, but you are likely to find at least one that fits your needs.

From the Fresh Choice Kitchens website:

"Fresh Choice Kitchens (formerly the Vancouver Community Kitchen Project) works to create opportunities for people to cook together, thereby building community strength through food. What began as a Vancouver area effort in the mid-’90s has evolved into a community kitchen resource for all B.C. It creates and collects educational tools and shares them through workshops, in print and online. It supports individuals and community groups who want to run a kitchen. It fosters independence by offering groups the knowledge and resources that community kitchens (CKs) need to manage themselves and to overcome obstacles."

Secretary

The general plot of this movie is about a young woman who has had a lifetime habit of self-harming and who meets a man whom she develops a dominant-submissive relationship with. From that sentence, it would be easy to pass off this movie as erotic fluff or too alternative for the general population to relate to, but that would be doing this film injustice.

First, I would like to make it clear that I am not promoting a lifestyle of self-harm (in the movie the woman does stop this behaviour). When it comes to living alternative lifestyles, it may be difficult to distinguish what is harm and what is a healthy expression of one’s individual way of living life. This is something for each person to examine in themselves.

That being said, this is an exceptional movie and, keeping an open mind, full of tenderness, care, and beauty. Though the actual footage is not graphic or sexually explicit, it is powerfully emotional, intimate, and erotic. What I like most about this film is that it demonstrates that it is possible for people to live outside the norm and still function as happy, healthy, and whole human beings.

Even if your lifestyle choices are not as dramatic as in the film, if you are living with a mental illness, or even just living your life differently that what might be considered ‘normal,’ this film provides a hopefulness and a sense of self-entitlement to the way you choose to live. Maybe that means working part-time even though your peers have full-time careers. Maybe you make the choice to not have children when your friends are settling down into traditional family roles. Maybe you enjoy a healthy dominant-submissive relationship. Just know that however you choose to live, as long as you are making healthy choices (I can’t say it enough), you are living the way that is right for you and you do not need to compare yourself to what might be right for others.

Getting the Most out of Therapy – Questions for Reflection

One hour isn’t a lot of time, which means most of the therapeutic work you do will be outside of your therapist’s office. That’s not to say therapy should be ignored; many important topics arise and of course, the greatest benefit comes from having someone who cares listen to what you have to say.

Below are some questions you can review after your session to help identify issues that may need further discussion or simply just to give you the time to reflect on what is most relevant to you and help you understand yourself better.

Set aside some time during the week to review these questions. You may want to answer them by journaling in a free-writing style or by working through each question individually. Alternatively, you can copy and paste the questions, leaving lots of space between, and print off copies that you can fill in. However you decide to approach it, I highly recommend actually writing your thoughts down. That way, when complicated issues arise, you can easily review what you worked on the previous week so that you keep moving forward in your work. It will also help as a reminder for things you want to discuss in upcoming sessions. Lastly, by bringing in to session something tangible with your thoughts at least laid out, if not completely worked out, you may find the extra courage to talk about subjects you have had difficult bringing up before.

For all the questions, also consider ‘why’ for each one.

Questions to review after a session:

- What came up that surprised me?
- What did I learn?
- Did I talk about the things I intended to?
* What were the things I most wanted to discuss?
* What blocks prevented me from doing so?
- Did I intentionally not discuss anything? Why not?
* If there’s something you don’t feel comfortable talking to your
therapist about, you can explore, with them, why that might be.
- What were some of the most intense thoughts/feelings that arose during
session?
- What were some of the most helpful or pleasant events?
* This doesn’t have to be anything major. Maybe you just enjoyed
how comfortable the chair felt.
- If I could change, explain, or reword something I said what would it be and
how would I change it?
- Was there anything my therapist said that I would like to be explained
further?
- Is there anything I can do to make my sessions work better for me?
* Maybe bringing in an object of comfort or making a point of saying
something you have difficulty talking about.
- How can I help someone else this coming week?
- What’s the one thing I most want to work on this week?
* This isn’t to say you shouldn’t work on other things, but is there
to help you focus your attention and energy on difficult work you
might otherwise choose to avoid.
- What can I do right now to make the week less stressful?

Questions to review before a session:

Most of these questions came from this site.

- What one thing do I most want to discuss?
- What did I learn last week?
- What was my greatest accomplishment over the past week?
- Which moment from last week was the most memorable and why?
- What have I struggled with in the past that might also affect the upcoming
week?
- Was there anything I felt was not a beneficial use of my time?
- Are there any issues that I am ready to let go of?
- What have I been avoiding?
- What opportunities are available?
- Have any of my recent actions moved me closer to my goals?
- What’s the next step for each goal?
- What am I looking forward to during the upcoming week?
- What are my fears?
- What am I most grateful for?
* Try keeping a daily gratitude journal and review it once a week for
events that were especially notable.

Questions to review a few times each year:

Another good site with thoughtful questions.

- In what ways have I changed?
* These might be major life changes or smaller things such as changing
your morning routine.
- Which of these changes have been the most beneficial?
- Which of these changes have been the least beneficial?
- Am I satisfied with the work I’ve been doing on myself?
- Have there been any internal or external blocks to my progress?
- What are my goals?
* Have they changed? Have some goals been accomplished?
- Do I have the best of intentions?
- How am I spending my time?
* Which of these activities are most/least beneficial? Are there any
you can do without?
- What has been troubling me the most?
- What has been my most memorable moment?
- What am I most proud of?
- Do I support those that support me?
- Have I been challenging myself?
- Have any of my interests changed?
* It’s important to remember that change it’s a natural process and a
change in interests may simply reflect this. However, sometimes are
interests change because we are avoiding certain things. Explore why
these changes have occurred keeping in mind it’s ok to move on from one
interest to another if that’s benefiting you.
- What motivates me?
- What have I most enjoyed doing?
- What have I done well?
- What are sources/drains on my energy?
- When do I feel most like myself?
- What am I good at?
- Are there any new things I would like to try?
- Where am I meeting resistance right now?
- If I was brave, what would I do?
- What are my dreams?
- What is the easiest thing I can do next?

If you are on disability or Plan G, most of your medications will be covererd. For those that aren't though, here is a list of dispensing fees at numerous pharmacies across Canada (excluding Ontario). Quote of the Day

“You are capable of more than you know. Choose a goal that seems right for you and strive to be the best, however hard the path. Aim high. Behave honorably. Prepare to be alone at times, and to endure failure. Persist! The world needs all you can give.”

- Edward O. Wilson

Quote of the Day

"Because I own all of me, I can become intimately acquainted with me. By so doing, I can love me and be friendly with all my parts. I know there are aspects about myself that puzzle me, and other aspects that I do not know — but as long as I am friendly and loving to myself, I can courageously and hopefully look for solutions to the puzzles and ways to find out more about me.

However I look and sound, whatever I say and do, and whatever I think and feel at a given moment in time is authentically me. If later some parts of how I looked, sounded, thought, and felt turn out to be unfitting, I can discard that which is unfitting, keep the rest, and invent something new for that which I discarded. I can see, hear, feel, think, say, and do. I have the tools to survive, to be close to others, to be productive, and to make sense and order out of the world of people and things outside of me.

I own me, and therefore, I can engineer me. I am me, and I am Okay.”

Quote of the Day

My head is bursting
with the joy of the unknown.
My heart is expanding a thousand fold.
Every cell,
taking wings,
flies about the world.
All seek separately
the many faces of my love.

- Rumi

Quote of the Day

Love is the passionate search for a truth other than your own; and once you feel it, honestly and completely, love is forever. Every act of love, every moment of the heart reaching out, is a part of the universal good: it's a part of God, or what we call God, and it can never die.

A New Year

The new year can be a time of emotional turmoil as the energy of the holidays winds down and expectations for change rise up. Below are three articles from Yoga Journal that discuss the differences between goals and intentions, how to make healthy resolutions, and how to positively effect change in your life. The articles are written with a lot of yoga language, but the messages can be applied to anyone.
